Setting the mood for Valentines Day
Valentines day is coming and its time to plan your home decor. Setting a romantic mood is a must if you are planning on staying in. Chocolate and roses are great but here are some ideas to spice up your night.
Say I love you to your Valentine by making there favorite meal. Make a meal that appeals to the senses and not to heavy. Once you have the meal planned, style the table with red, pink and cream flowers, a nude table cloth and candles to set a romantic mood.
Why give Chocolate all the attention on Valentines day. While we love it, I am thinking Caramel for Valentines day this year. The soft, dense, chewy candy can be made so many different ways but here is a recipe using caramel that you might want to try. Gourmet.com
Martha Stewart came up with a cute idea if you have a tea lover in your life. Very simple (about 5 min.) you can make these adorable little heart tea bags.
Scattering rose petals on a bed or around your tub is one way to liven up your night. Make sure you have your room clean and tidy to make a nice atmosphere.
Bring some bright flowers into your space. It makes a beautiful statement and is romantic.
Adorn a home with Books
One of my favorite things to give and receive is a nice big coffee table book. Even the person who has everything could always use another book. Besides the glossy interesting pages on the inside, they look great just sitting on your table or stacked in your shelves. Plus, they never go out of style.
Books are a great accessory to define the style of a space. You can tell a lot about ones personality by looking at a stack of their books.
Here are a few of my favorites for different personalities….

Next time you are out shopping for a housewarming gift, a book could be the perfect present. If you know their style or color-scheme, try to pick something that will compliment their space.
Glamour Meets Modern
I thought I would share a few Jaw dropping glamorous rooms I have come across. Glamour styled rooms can sometimes look to overdone. These rooms show how beautiful modern and glamorous can look.
I love how Kelly Hoppen did the window treatments in this room. We plan to do something similar in a clients home we are working on. Window Treatments add so much to a room when done right.
The paint color in this room is beautiful! Paint your wall in Eagle Rock by Benjamin Moore to get this look.
Enclosing a space makes a room feel warm and inviting. Use a sheer fabric to enclose a space in your home. It will add instant glamour.
The bergere chairs look perfect upholstered in the Ikat fabric. So many of our clients have chairs with beautiful lines that just need to be updated.
Tips from Elle Decor on how to make a Modern Glamorous room:
- Blend old and new
- Create warmth with metallic tones
- Experiment with drapery
- Mix in Global touches
- Amp up drama with multiples
- Select striking Chandeliers
- Find room for a daybed
- Set off an intimate retreat
- An Awe-inspiring fireplace
- Think scale thing grand
- Be fearless with color
Mixing mediums
One of the questions that comes up time and time again is whether or not its okay to mix. Is it okay to mix gold and silver? Dark and light wood? Modern and traditional? And the answer, for the most part is YES! The mixing of different mediums is usually what brings a space to life and brings an unexpected excitement to a room which could otherwise feel a little too matchy-matchy.
While I do encourage mixing, you dont want to go overboard on the different types of mixtures you place in one space. If you have a pretty traditional room, its okay to mix in some modern accessories, lighting, and artwork to freshen things, BUT then you should take caution in your color palette. If you are going to mix several different finishes on furniture in a room… try to keep all the lines the same, and choose furniture that is the same style. Remember, the goal is to have a sense of eclectic beauty.
SHAPES AND COLORS
Theres something so exciting about the Trina Turk boutique that draws me in every time I pass by. The graphic prints and colors evoke happy feelings!
Here are a few of my favorite ways to bring some of those happy feelings to your home:

update your look
There are a few small things you can do to update your decor without any heavy lifting or major remodeling. The easiest way to update your look is to decide a direction you would like to go with your style, and then change the small items in the room that take away from that feel. Then replace with a few new items that bring a new feeling in.
These “small items” or accessories are the elements in your room like lighting, area rugs, pillows, books, frames, vases, etc.
For example… if you are trying to brighten a room and create a more relaxing feel, here are 4 key elements to accomplish that look:
PILLOWS: Change out your old pillows with tassels and fringe and bring in some natural textures like linen, cotton, or hemp.
AREA RUG: Bring in some seagrass or sisal to ground things.

LIGHTING: If you don’t have enough light in the room, add some more lamps! If you have the space for it, hang a chandelier! If you have an outdated light fixture or pendant, simply replace it with something fresh and new!

We just used this in a client's home in Crystal Cove... They are so delicate and pretty but still casual and cool.
